I sometimes drive by old shopping centers near my home and try to recall what stores and restaurants have occupied the location before the current one... its this stupid mental game i play to see how bad my long term memory has eroded..
here's a list of old stores, restaurant chains and misc places that are long gone, but still very much alive in the neural activity of my shriveling dendrites..
some restaurants may have a few odd locations still hanging on, but nothing like they used to...

Sambos was kinda controversial, cause they said it was racial with "little black sambo" as the early painted face mascot just before the tiger... the owner's claimed he was Indian, but who really knows cause a "Sambo" is still considered a derogetory comment even now...

Fedco!! I was so sad when they closed up and sold their location to Target. Someone called them "The Last of the Mohicans." haha corny..but so true.
Everything was so cheap there. Was it because mostly "old" people shopped there?

Gemco was the bomb! Remember when the Broadway's was the glamorous department store? And JC Penney's. I got all my Laker Showtime t-shirts from Penney's.

Hahaha.... I was so gonna say that there's still a Pioneer Chicken around. I also like the fried chicken at Golden Bird off of Pico and Rimpau. Deliciously crispy! YUM! I miss Carnations Restaurant, Music Plus, and all the other ones listed on your list. Great post!

I loved Lucky's and the ads (TV and Radio) voiced by Stephanie Edwards. there was something so local about that....and seemingly forever about her ads. And then they were gone. Carpeteria also had the most amazing theme song. I have that in my head to this day. I probably heard it for the first time in like 1976 or something. Of all the songs to have in your head for 95% of your life... "Carpeteria... Carpeteria!" (There is one location left that I've seen downtown...but it seems not for the public....)
There's actually a Bob's Big Boy down Wilshire in the Mid-Wilshire district (somewhere b/t Crenshaw and Fairfax, I believe). And I thought I saw a Pioneer Chicken on Sunset, near Echo Park Blvd. Never actually got the chance to hit either of the two trips down memory lane, but it's awesome to read through all of these places. I was just thinking about Lucky's the other day...

Sage's grocery store (San Bernardino area; SB's adult school, once a Sage's, now has a name with the acronym S.A.G.E.S.)
Market Basket (there was one in Redlands; not sure if it was an independent or a chain.) Also there was a small independent Redlands chain called Gerrard's with 2 stores.
Monkey Ward's, Broadway and May Co. department stores, and Harris' (small chain in San Bernardino area)
BEST - Now that was a cool store! They had the stuff no one else had. It was cool waiting for your order to come down the roller chute from the upper floor warehouse.

Andy Granatelli Tune-up Masters (remember that funny logo? - they supposedly had reps patrolling the LA area looking for cars displaying the logo and giving the drivers prizes)

Another stereo chain (can't remember the name now!) with a blabbermouth named Tom Campbell hyping big deals on radio ads. I always remember he said "programpable" instead of "programmable."
DAK (mail order place based in Chatsworth.) Remember the fascination when a DAK catalog came in the mail? Ditto for JS&A.
Yeah, Fedco and Farrell's. Two F's I miss very much. Fedco was my mom's favorite place and I pretty much grew up with it. I could still walk the San Bernardino store blindfolded if I could make it come back. :( I always remember the sign over the drinking fountain in the later years with the photo of the LA Coliseum that said more people shop at Fedco every week than attended the 1984 Olympic opening ceremonies! And of course the Texas Size popcorn and the yummy Mexican food from the deli. Oh, and the old typewriter section back in the early 70s, that had a blue light that meant the electric typewriters were turned on. And oh! the ecstasy when the garden department became the toy department!!
And Farrell's - SUEY! SUEY! Out comes the Trough! And I can't remember the other big honkin' ice cream bowl but they'd bring it out on a 2-man stretcher with a siren and drum as accompaniment. The junior class at my high school in Escondido had the senior river trip "welcome home" party for us at Farrell's and it was a blast! My dad, however, said Farrell's didn't hold a candle to his favorite childhood ice cream place, the (most likely also defunct) Highland Dairy in New Britain, CT. For a mere thirty-five cents they had a bowl called the "Steamboat" that put the Trough to shame!
Oh yeah, remember the Federated commercial where Fred Rated was running at some insane speed down freeways and stuff while chanting "Federated" at an increasingly feverish pitch then smashed out a window? Wild!! I used to rent movies from their National City store all the time when in the Navy.

I love your nostalgia trip! I am probably older than most readers and will try to tie together some things that have been lost to the ages. But before I do that, I need to add one more name to the list: Shakey's pizza parlors (and ye public house). They aren't all gone yet, but soon will be. I used to go with my family and another family, we would order the thin crust pizzas (because that is all they made), pitchers of beer for the folks, coke, root beer and strawberry for the kids. there was a player piano with flourescent colored keys to watch under a black light that played all sorts of musical styles.
What got me here was the search for pizza pups that were apparently only found at Fedco. It was a slice of the thin cheese pizza wrapped around a hot dog and put into the oven for an ungodly time (probably only 2 or 3 minutes, but I was hungry and salivating), and when you tried to eat it, the crust was so dry it scratched your mouth and the cheese was so hot, it burned your tongue. Delicious and a true taste treat!
Pup and Taco served slushes, the forerunner of the frozen foamy things you buy at 7-11 now. They also had combo burritos that gave instant and enduring stinky gas attacks.
Woolworth is the most interesting story. It had its start in 1879 in Lancaster, PA, spread all over the country, and did have lunch counters. It was the 30's-50's idea of walmart, selling just about anything you could think of for less than anywhere else around. In the 1970's, the writing was on the walls that the 5 and 10 cent stores were about out of gas, so Woolworth diversified. They opened all sorts of speciality stores in the new covered malls that were popping up all over the country. Foot Locker,Kinney shoes, Best of Times, Northern Reflections and others. In 1979, the group was the largest retailer in the world.
Farrell's was owned by Thrifty drug stores, and used thrifty ice cream (which is still sold at Sav-on). The big huge bowl was called the Mt Whitney here in Southern California, but went by other names in other parts of the country. I was at a Farrell's in Hawaii in the 1970s and it was called by some volcano name. Makes sense. The Trough , as enormous as it seemed, was only a double banana split. Only? I still have a few ribbons awarded for ordering and eating a trough.
Pioneer chicken was a true treat for me growing up. The sweet, crispy batter was truly something to remember. If I can find one still making the chicken the old way, I will be set.

I, too, found it interesting to take a trip down "memory lane"- with neither good nor bad remembrances.
Another place I remember= Winchell's Donuts- haven't seen one in twenty years or more.
I know there is a Farrells up in the valencia, santa clarita area? went there a year ago just because I missed going as a kid. it's at a mini golf coarse. Definitly not like how it used to be. Remeber all the salt water taffy?

Straw Hat Pizza is very much alive still. Its mostly in NorCal but they still active in SoCal. Google for their site.
Fedco started as a place for government employees. Their membership was $5(lifetime). Later on, they opened the chain to the rest of the public. Public lifetime membership was $10. I too remember the pizza sold at the Fedco. I don't know what it is, but its one of those pizzas that I will never forget and wish I could have just one more slice all these years after.
Lucky Supermarkets are starting to make a comeback. Especially in Northern California.
I remember when Safeway was in SoCal. Safeway has never returned to this area, instead they took over the Vons and Pavilion's store chains. Now, Vons are disappearing from my area.
